Sounds like you have an intrument of interest. Leave it alone and suck it up, or sell as-is. ASAP.

Actually there is a cleaning solution made especially for cleaning viols. If I were you I would find out who cleans instruments for youth orchestras in your area and consult with them about it. I hate to recommend a product for such an expensive instrument without knowing what the finish is like, what woods were used, and just how bad the odor is. So please, consult an expert who has cleaned orchestral instruments for years and has a better than decent reputation. I would suggest that as a starting point you might contact Williamson Music in Dallas, Texas USA and go from there.

Cheers!

Hi Osmar O,
I'd try Murphy's oil soap pour some on a rag with alittle water & like wash the wood down, then dry it. This should remove the smoke smell. I'm not sure if you can use it on the strings though.
I use it on cabinets, hardwood floors, even to get baked on grease off the stove. Besides has a nice smell to it. You can find this in most grocery, hardware stores. Good luck & have a good day!
