You'll find that the new Lappy has a SATA hard-drive and you need to load the drivers for the hard-drive so that XP will recognise it .... at the very start of the XP install you will see a notice across the bottom of the screen that reads "press F6 if you need to install 3rd party drivers" ... this is when you need to install the SATA drivers. A generic set of drivers from "silicon image" should do the trick

You need to go into the setup ie BIOS/CMOS and see why the drive isn't being recognized. Hopefully it will tell you on the screen how to get into setup, on this PC I hit Delete, but on my other one I hit F2 and I think my friend does something with Escape.

Is it a new unformat HD? Have checked the connection of HD?
Is the setting of junper of HD right? Does your CMOS supports your new HD capacity? inferface is ok with it? Oh ,they are so many many you need to consider. So get somebody who is good at hardware to help you.

probably have a stuck partition...use a boot disk and a partition removal program to prep the drive first

New labtop, is your xp pro legit? sometime when you have a copy of xp it wont work. But there is so many things that can go wrong so please try to give more details

check and see if your BIOS shows the HDD if not then id suspect either a connection or a bad HDD.
