There has got to be a "fool-proof" (pun intended) way to keep myself from locking my keys in my car! Any advice or ideas that have worked for you?

I should mention that it is in Women's Studies because i dont know any men that do this, but I do know several women who lock themselves out of the car, house, etc.

1. "On Star" is dreamy for this.
2. Chain the keys to you belt loop.
3. Never lock your car. Expect anything you have to be stolen at all times. Great technique - keeps car clean, and streams line your driving life --- have a convertable --- so I live like this with my car --- better to have someone open doors and look for stuff that isn't there than for them to slash my top and find nothing worth steeling.
4. They have "Key Magnet holders". You put a spare door key inside this magnet holder and place in your wheel hub ... again, you have to be willing to have stuff stolen from your car, but less of a chance.

It is always sensible to keep duplicate keys in your wallet or in some zipped compartment in your handbag (because even if you manage to never lock yourself out there is always losing your keys or having them fall down a storm drain, etc.).

You just have to make one simple rule for yourself: Tell yourself you have to always keep your keys in your hand until you, say, walk past the fender of your car. Get the rule fixed in your head (the way, maybe, brushing your teeth in the morning is fixed in your head) that no matter what else, no matter where you're going, no matter who you're with, etc., the Number 1 rule is always make sure you feel the keys in the palm of your hand until you walk past the car's fender (or until you walk 20 feet away). Make a big deal (to yourself) about the "ritual" of putting those keys in your pocket or purse.

If you just decide to make this type of rule the keys in your hand becomes as important as unlocking the car door before getting in.

Keep an extra key with you in your wallet taped to an unused business card. Then you do not have to worry about locking your keys in the car because you always have a spare on you. Problem solved.

My father in law used to travel a lot for his job, he always has two sets of keys. If one is locked in the car, the other is always in his pants pocket.

I never put my keys away until I am away from my car. I keep them in my hand. That way, I never assume I put them in my purse or my pocket and realize later they are in the car. Only way it's worked for me.

Keep a spare key in your purse or pocket so when it does happen, it is not an issue. Good luck and God bless.
