Plays everything from tip-to-toe, it can play Windows Media files, Winamp, Real Player files and MP3, it can play your average WMA except from ones that you record, if you would like to play your own podcasts you can purchase or download free WMA to MP3 converters to place on your I-pod, I-tunes was just designed because of I-pods fantastic boom in purchases.
I hope this helped answer your question.
Have a great day!
Kind Regards, Timothy H

Any mp3, you download itunes and plug in and drag to songs to the library. You can use music you download...You don't have to buy em.
