Well, this is a loaded question! There can be many reason , some which were mentioned by others but I have to say from experience the main reason is control! If a person decides, and they do decide, not to speak to you for a lengthy period and I mean a number of days, week etc., it is usually a control issue as it is so hard to live with someone when you are consantly wondering what is wrong, what did I do, walking on egg shells is not healthy. Yes men do respond to situations differently but they still have the ability to communicate if they want to, no matter what planet they are from. Maybe they communicate in one syllable words but the silent treatment is a form of emtional abuse. I also found the more you try and try and caudle them, baby them, they worse they get. If you can get him into see a pastor, friend, therapist that would be a good thing..Try and do some things that you like to do when he is like that, go to lunch with the girls, take a class, read, do art projects, if you have kids take them somewhere fun and let him sit in his silence for a while and it may not be so much fun..Don't blame yourself or walk on eggshells around him, he is the one with the issue and if he is having trouble at work, emotionally there is nothing you can do for him until he is ready to reach out.
I hope I don't sound like a cynic but I know it is hard. The hardest thing is to lie in the same bed with the man you love and be more lonely than if you were alone, that is just my opinion.

I have found men aren't like women. We need to talk things out from start to finish. If there's a problem we want to find the solution together. Men on the other hand are NOT the same. If there is a problem they want to find the answer on their own. If you come at them with an array of problems you loose them. They feel as though it's an attack. I bet when he gives you the silent treatment it's because he needs time to think of a solution or maybe to mad to communicate. Whatever you do don't badger him in situations like this. He will come around. I also found that the book men are from mars and women are from Venus Helps allot!

men like to not talk for a while
Its in their nature to pull away from a woman so to speak (by not talking or even an outing with mates) because women yacking all the time non stop drives a man nuts they really need a break!
give him his space & he will be more loving they say!!

he might be avoiding talking about what he is mad about, and you might be better at debating than he. so he is using the control thing by not talking to you. he figures it will make you upset and you will beg him to talk to you. then he feels that he is in control..
[i had a husband that tried to pull this game, so i waited it out, and he finally gave in...it is such a silly game [like a spoiled little kid that can not get his way] play along with him for awhile and see what happens, i would play it right back to him....

the only reason that i would do that would be i'm upset, but i think that you should just go sit next to him when he gives you the silent treatment and put your arms around one of his and do what you were doing like that.

Seriously, I have a ton of brothers. Men don't process things as fast as women. Nor do they articulate things as well as women. Therefore, they spend a few days putting it together.

because sometimes you need to just tune someone out, my bf sometimes gives me the silent treatment, it drives me crazy ... but just occupy yourself with something else while he is still heated...just give him some space so he can cool down till he's ready to talk

He is a typical male.
They need to hide away in their caves from time to time.
As a woman you are well skilled in your verbal skills.
Tell him you will give him his quiet time if he agrees to discuss things with you later.

i read in that book men from marce and women from venus. that men like to have their space from time to another. they like to hide inside their cave for a while. so don't give them hard time during these moments.

Most men want some quiet time to themselves .If they cant get it then they go quiet and dont talk.
