Ok...you travel back to meet yourself at age 18; you give your younger self stock market secrets and winning mega-lottery numbers as well as personal advice about bad relationships and people to avoid. Then you time travel back to the present day. Would you rememeber only your original life and the trip back in time? Or would you know everything your rich younger self experienced from age 18 to the present? For instance; if you where single-broke and lonely when you went back in time and when you returned you where rich and married to your dream lover...would you know your lover?

It is possible to go in any direction in any dimension. Our transition in the time dimension we recognize as time. We are able to move in any direction in the spatial dimension but at the present have no ability to change our motion in the time dimension.
Even if we had the ability to change our motion in the time dimension it would not take us back or forward to the universe in the past or the future. The universe only exists at one point in time. If you go back in the time dimension the universe will not be there. It is the same as trying to go back to a party you had in a park yesterday by going back to the park today. Of course you will find that no one is there.
The laws of physics allow you to move in time but not go back to the past or the future. They are two different things.

If you were rich and married to your dream lover, you would not have the motivation to go back to age 18 and warn yourself. Why would you?

So the time traveling you would be returning to a future based on past events of which you have no memory. You have no memory of you. Hmm. Think though, a different path through space-time = a different entity, right?
But your ultimate question is: would you know your lover? Do people know their lovers now, as much as they appreciate them, with a measure of unknown salted in? Would you love your lover? Yes.

Everything in your future would change, and any memory of your time travel would be erased. I think that you would know the people in your future because you would have all the memories from age 18 forward.
A question for you Thai Spice:
Do you think you would remember specific events and scenarios told to you by your future self? Because anyone they told you to avoid or situations wouldn't have happened, because you would not follow the same path. For example, they tell you that your friend Charlie is bad news and you will get arrested with him. So when you meet Charlie you avoid him, will you remember that your future self told you that you were arrested?

Time travel is always full of paradoxes. Suppose you went back in time and killed your younger self.
In the move "The Time Machine," the hero keeps trying to go back in time to save his love, only to find that he can't save her. She keeps dying at a later time. Each time he saves her from the next "death," she survives only a few moments more.
His question becomes "Why can't I change the past?"
His answer comes when he is taught that changing the past removes the reason for travelling into the past. If I am motivated to "improve" myself, and my self is improved, then what motivates me to go back and improve myself?

I'd give anything to go back to 1977...and look like my avatar again....
I'd warn my younger me about places to NOT go, jobs to NOT take... relationships to NOT get into, I'd go back to school, invest in real estate in places that then, were dumpy and today are fabulous, etc....
I'd warn myself to work out for a better body, quit drinking.
I'd buy a few cars I love from then and store them so today they would be classics with 200 original miles...
I would change my life completely...
but... we can't do that, can we.
