There are many species of danios but I assume that you refer to zebra danios. The male's anal fin is striped horizontally but the female's is striped diagonally. The male tends to be slender and the female is both a little larger and chubbier. If you wish to breed then...build a small box or really a frame about three inches deep with screen mesh on the bottom....build it to fit your egg tank...zebras will eat their own eggs....condition the breeders seperately...most breeders us 2 males to a female...egg tank should be bare...just a sponge filter....put the breeders together at dusk in the breeding trap....in the morning there will be a shower of tiny eggs that hatch in about 72 hours (depends on temperature) Once the fry have stared swimming, feed infusoria (you can buy liquid fry food at most pet shops)...it is better to feed small amounts several times a day than to foul the tank.

Males are more slender and sleek. Mature females are fat, especially when egg-laden. In the ordinary zebra danio, the males' yellow white areas (stripes and on the dorsal fin edge) are a much stronger yellow. Males tend to be smaller and more vibrant in color. Females full of eggs will have an enlarged ovipositor (where the eggs come out).
