Just keep at it until you find your sound. In addition to learning chords, you can also learn scales, modes, arpeggios-E.T.C.
Playing with others is definetly the way to go.I would also recomend
Books and Dvds.Don't just get stuck in learning your own genre.Experiment with other sounds as well. One title I can suggest to you right off of the top of my head is SCALES AND MODES IN THE BEGGINING.Also, take some of your favorite songs, break them down and look for the fundamentals in them. You may be ready to write songs too.

If I were you I'd do one or both of these things:

#1- Choose a song you really like and work on it until your fingers bleed.. I mean, get it DOWN... play it in your sleep..play it slow at first then up the tempo until you can play it fast.. It might be the easiest song, just a few chord changes, but there are always extra chords you can find to fill in between changes that make it sound better; and you may need a coach to show you what they are.. You know what I mean..

#2-Borrow a much better guitar.. The better the action, the better you play.. Some places will let you rent a very nice guitar, and you'll love every second you work with these nice instruments..

I hope these help..

Take some lessons. Get some other guitar players to practice with you. Playing with people who are better than you will help you improve.

Practice! Practice! Practice! Watch, listen, and learn, and paying for a few lessons wouldn't hurt:)
