Third party could occur in America because the republicans are moving further to the right socially on issues. Then the democrats are losing the center because of populist garbage. If a third party came in it have economic philosophy closer to the republicans, but social issues it be closer to the democrats. Its possible for a 3rd party if democrats and republicans keep moving in opposite directions in the political spectrum.

Third parties are not in competition with a republic, but with the other two parties. Parliamentary systems presume multiple parties. The United States has had two dominant parties for so long that third parties are hard-pressed to explain their existence as other than spoilers in elections. Ross Perot played that role at one time. Third parties attempt to differentiate themselves from the two dominant parties and use their support to gain political advantage from the more dominant party to which they give their support.
