An Egyptian drawing of a condom being worn has been found to be 3,000 years old. It is unknown, however, if the Egyptian pictured wearing the device intended to use it for contraception, or for ritual purposes.

In 16th century Italy, Gabrielle Fallopius authored the first-known published description of condom use for disease prevention. He recommended soaking cloth sheaths in a chemical solution and allowing them to dry prior to use.

The oldest condoms found (rather than just pictures or descriptions) are from 1640, discovered in Dudley Castle in England. They were made of animal intestine, and it is believed they were used for STD prevention.

In 19th century Japan, both leather condoms and condoms made of tortoise shells or horns were available.

The rubber vulcanization process was patented by Charles Goodyear in 1844, and the first rubber condom was produced in 1855. These early rubber condoms were 1-2mm thick and had seams down the sides. Although they were reusable, these early rubber condoms were also expensive.

Were camels given IUD's to protect themselves from other camels.. or... cuz species dont mix with... oh never mind...

Anyway, here it goes.. Condoms go way, way back. The ancient Egyptians in and around 1000 B.C. fashioned the first-known prototypes out of linen sheaths. The Chinese did the same with silk paper.

Other cultures adapted various materials over the centuries that followed, directed at a dual purpose -- preventing pregnancy and preventing disease. Gabrielle Fallopius was the first to formally study the effectiveness of these devices. In the 16th century, he noted that in 1,100 men using linen sheaths with intercourse, none developed syphilis. In the 17th century, the devices in

Europe included linen and fish and animal intestine, and their usefulness as contraceptive devices was recognized in publications. Cost was an issue, causing condoms to be reused. Not until 1844 were they mass-produced with the invention of vulcanization, a process that converts rubber into a strong elastic, moldable material.

That said, the original prototypes were more like inner tubes than the current transparent models, which only began to appear for single episode use around 1930. The reservoir tip was an innovation introduced in the 1950s with textured condoms added in 1973, and polyurethane alternatives to latex launched in 1994.

Taaaaaa Daaaaaa! The condom!

The earliest evidence of European condom use was cave paintings at Les Combarelles found in the Dordogne area of Southern France in 100 - 200 AD

Egyptian tribesmen used sheaths for ritual reasons and to protect themselves against insect bites, injury and infection in 1350 - 1220 BC

Gabrielle Fallopius invented a condom made of linen to protect men from syphilis in the 1500s. It was tested on 1,100 men - none of whom became infected with syphilis, providing an early demonstration of the effectiveness of condoms to help protect against STIs

In 1758 Casanova used condoms as a contraceptive to prevent his lovers becoming pregnant

In the mid 1800s the revolutionary discovery of rubber vulcanisation had moved condom production nearer to where we are today and it became possible to mass-produce more reliable and less expensive products including condoms

A second technical revolution took place in the manufacture of condoms with the introduction of liquid latex in the 1930s

Condoms are now also made from polyurethane

Condoms began to be sold in pubs, grocery stores and supermarkets throughout the world in the 1980s.

This ought to help round out your condom education class...

In days of old, when knights were bold
And condoms weren't invented,
They'd tie their socks around their co"ks,
And babies were prevented.

Condoms have improved and evolved just as everything else has. The basic design, for obvious reasons, has remained the same but the manufacturing material used has improved from natural animal intestine (sheep gut) to synthetic latex - "Now in vibrant glow-in-the-dark colors, fantastic fruity flavors, pre-lubricated and ribbed for her pleasure. Available sizes to fit even the smallest male anatomy like a one fingered glove".... "In too much of a hurry - No worry. Our new numbs-it formula can help you last longer - guaranteed or your money back. (This offer does not include professional street-walker fees or the cost of a cheap motel.)"

Consider yourself an honored graduate of the Condom Academy for Cool Co-eds.

While the history of condoms is quite extensive, they have never really been very reliable as a means of birth control. They do seriously reduce the risk of STD's. Unless you are in a monogamous, serious long term relationship, you should always use one for protection against STD's, but if you want protection against pregnancy, please get in touch with a health care provider or Planned Parenthood to learn more about birth control.

condoms have been around for several hundred years, the condoms we use now are made of latex (rubber) but in the past it was animal gut. Cassanova used condoms way back then and I don't suppose he was the first.

Animal intestines, gross but true

I was born in 1968 and I think that was the era of peace, love, rock and roll and drugs. Those hippies burned their bra's and I'm pretty sure they had orgies and loved anybody they could.......all without condoms, because that wouldn't have been natural, like nature, man. Peace out.
