As far as horror goes, I'm a big fan of stephen king, but his books tend to be kind of long. Right now I'm reading a thriller called "24/7" by Jim Brown about a Survivor type reality show that gets deadly and it's really good. Mystery wise i like the Sue Grafton alphabet books.

If you haven't tried Dean Koontz, you should, I started reading his books about 2 years ago and have now caught up on everything he has written. I find that they all keep me in suspense and he is a very good writer. I like him better than Stephen King because you don't have to read 200 pages before the book gets interesting.

Anything Stephen King, my favorites are Rose Madder, Dreamcatcher, Needful Things(very scary) and Bag of Bones. Stephen King definitely writes the scariest.

Try Dean Koontz if you havnt read any of his books already. They are more thriller than horror, but they are really good and he has written heaps of books so they will keep you going for a while. "Twillight Eyes", "Whispers" and "Watchers" I especially enjoyed. Otherwise the Anne Rice vampire books are supposed to be good, but I havn't read any of them yet.

R.L.Stine is really creepy if you don't mind really twisted, like wtf?-type endings, and Christopher Pike is good for just plain creepy. I don't know any titles off the top of my head, but you'd pretty much be good with anything by them. OOoh, and if you like mystery, try Agatha Christie. She is excellent for that, and her books usually have a little thrill/horror thrown into them.

Although it’s not exactly in the genre you described, you might try Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood”. It’s a true account of a multiple murder in Kansas.
