It is most important that you pay close attention to the security of your new living quarters. Add any security measures to the windows and/or doors. Also, always be aware of your environment. Check with the local police department for some information about the area in which you're moving. Become familiar with the faces in your building or neighborhood. Hopefully you'll be safe and can enjoy your new space in life. It helps to be careful about the people you invite to your home. Be cautious and selective. Remember this is your personal space and should be positive and a joy, so invite only positive, joyful people into your home. Best Wishes

In general order of importance...
A toaster and kettle. Will get you a lot further than you think.
Having some cutlery and general electrical appliances..hairdryer etc.
being able to budget.
knowing how to iron.
knowing how to cook.
Having a fridge, a washing machine and a cooker. A washing machine is really important if you're able but you can get by quite easily, wash at a laundrette..get your parents to do it lol. Or even hand wash if need be..
I'd personally choose a washing machine over a cooker though LOL.
Having lots of towels.
Music.
That's about it. Anything else you can pick up easily (bedding, bin bags, toiletries etc), or it's not important for survival (bedding..) lol.

A job, a savings account with enough money that you can use for a down payment on an apartment. (Two months rent and a deposit!)
You'll need enough to live off till your paycheck comes.
If you don't have transportation to move your stuff, you'll need enough money to pay a taxi for several trips.
If you have a car and you plan on living with a friend, there's always moving expenses, it never hurts to have enough!
Your going to need enough clothes to last from when you want to wash until you wash next.
If you don't plan on using your friends washer or dryer, add enough monet for several loads.
If you plan on using the bus, consider the amount you use for one day and multiply by thirty.
Good Luck!

All the essentials Daniel L mentioned, and a good head on your shoulders. You need to be confident and strong in yourself. Life in the real world is crazy and unpredictable. It will throw stuff at you that you will never see coming and that you might not know how to deal with. Finding a sense of home no matter where you are at is essential. When you can be comfortable in yourself and realize you have the power to take on anything, then you can succeed at life on your own.

More than anything you have to have responsibility or it just won't work. If you can avoid roomates then you are already ahead of the game. Most roomate situations end badly (yes even with your best buddy). Make sure you have enough money for emergencies and also enough for the bills and food. Good luck because it is the best feeling to have that independence.

if this is your first time out of the house you don't really need much, you'll figure all that out as you go along.
You will want a few things though...
a bed (to sleep in)
an alarm clock (to make sure you are not late to earn that moeny to pay rent an utilities)
a couch (to let that one friend crash when they are drunk or broke or both)
a tv (entertainment for all)
atleast one towel (for yourself)

The most important thing is to know how to budget your money. If you can't do that, all is lost. You should have a job to go to before moving out.

A job to pay for all the things your going to need. If you don't know what they are, you aren't ready to be on your own.
