You can just quit. It's just considered professionalism to give a standard two week's notice in order for the company to find a replacement. Usually you do that if you want to use them as a reference in the future; however, it's illegal to give a bad reference anyway. A lot of companies these days escort you right out the door when you give a two week's notice, so depending on your rapport with your boss, the decision is ultimately yours.

You give two weeks' notice to be considerate of the employer's needs to find a replacement. This is a professional courtesy. A lot depends on what your call center job is like. Are you a low wage outbound salesperson? Are you an inbound low skill customer service representative or order taker? Those are jobs I wouldn't worry too much about leaving with a whole lot of professionalism but, at the same time, if you have been there for awhile, you will want them to say nice things about you.
This business about it being "illegal" to give you a bad reference is false. I'd love to see the statute. Did I mention that I'm an HR professional with a lot of experience and letters to put after my name? A lot rides on the policies of the company you are with and the state in which the reference check will be handled. If your employer is in Texas, they actually are protected from being sued if they simply reveal things that are documented in your employee file. That's one of many reasons why it is always a good idea to request to see your employee file before you leave the company. Generally, you have a right to have a statement attached to anything in the file that is negative. On the other hand, if the reference check is to be handled in California, it's much less likely that they will say anything negative about you including the simple statement that you quit without notice. However, there are numerous ways that people can communicate positive or negative leanings by voice tone or by simply refusing to answer simple questions.
"Hi, Mr. HR, thank you for taking my call. This will only take a moment to verify his employment and to get some performance information. What were Mr. Smith's dates of employment?"
"I'd really rather not talk about Mr. Smith."
That's a lot different from "We do not respond to employment confirmation or reference checks in the absence of a release note signed by the former employee."
That's a lot different from, "Mr. Smith? I miss him, he was great. Listen, I'm sorry but I can't really talk about Mr. Smith's employment without a release statement. Do you have one you can fax me?"
That's how it really happens.
Even in the people's republic of california, you can pretty much make the company's position on your employment known and you can generally do it without writing anything down. In fact, what you don't fill out often speaks volumes. But how do you sue someone for not answering a question to avoid putting negative information down about you?
Anyway, if you are a tier three technical assistance representative or other kind of skilled person in a call center environment, I advise you to leave on the most professional basis possible. If you are an outbound sales guy at a low wage, I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you've been there a long time.

Your question was why 2 weeks, the answer is that the company needs to replace you. however, if you just quit it will show an irresponsibility on your part and not on theirs. If you hate your job you should leave, but don't leave a bad taste with your employer, you never know what can hurt you. Just play by the rules and you will be okay. What's 2 weeks out of your life to keep your integrity in place and they get to replace you. I agree with you but I have been hurt by this thought process before.

giving a two week notice is not a law, but it is good if you at some time want to get a reference from this employer. and prospective employer's like to know that you respected the company.. it is considered the proper thing to do, but again, not against the law...many employers do not give the employee notice, they usually fire at will........

Most jobs will not give you a good recommendation.
The two weeks notice is also a notice to them to start looking for new hires.
By the way, it is illegal to give you a bad recommendation, but it is not illegal to say you won't rehire them.

You do NOT need to give two weeks notice in any form, if you're not working under a contract that says otherwise.

You don't HAVE to give notice. You just won't be paid as much when you leave, is all, and you will most likely have to go back to collect your money. They may delay payment as much as they can, as well.
