Overall Intel seems to be doing the best. For a long time AMD had the crown. But its still very close. I do not use computers without AMD for personal use. I am loyal to AMD and never had a processor fail on me, plus they are still very powerful even though Intel for now has a little higher rating. For cost both company's will make you pay around $200-$500 for a good processor. I suggest the AMD dual core 4200,4600,4800. They will cost around 200-400 and maybe a little more for the 4800. The 4400 is only a tad better then the 4200 and like $80 more so I do not count it.

The AMD FX-62 is basically the AMD pride and joy and costs around $1100. I use the dual core 5000 witch is a great processor a little better then the 4800 but expensive.

When it comes to the Intel the "Intel Core 2 Duo E6600" is probably one of the best processor to pick from its only around $300-$500 and kinda beats out most AMD processors. I still see AMD making a come back with there next line processors.

I aways suggest AMD and for the Application/Gamer I suggest the 4200,4600, or 4800. And if you got the cash FX-62 witch is a real nice gaming processor. Note out of all these I have mentioned the 4200 is the weakest and can still run 95% of the existing computer games today at almost Peak game setting Very Very well. For a matter of fact even the single core 3500 AMD processor can play games like the sims2 and battlefield 2 very well.

As you can see, you will find people have their preferences. But, they don't tell you why.

Myself, I do prefer AMD for the most part. One, they are a bit cheaper than Intel. Also, for the most part, AMD performs better than Intel for most games, even AMD's that are of a slower speed than Intel. The only time Intel has beaten AMD is with the newest Intel dual-core chip. And, that is ONLY because AMD hasn't put out a new chip similar to the Intel as yet. Give AMD a couple of months and they will be back in the lead.

Old School: Intel used to use only 3 logic circuits, AMD used 6. This caused a faster throughput of data (and a bit hotter chip). Intel put the Primary memory (L2 Cache) on the Motherboard, AMD placed it on the Chip. This made the chip faster to compute Graphics.

With the advent of 64-bit chips, it is harder to tell which is better. The best way to find out is to look for Benchmarks that many companies performs on the chips as they become available on the market (such as zdnet, PC World and other companies).

Both are equally good for gaming, but when it comes it to media editing, you should go with AMD Phenom II X6 which is gonna perform far better than Intel Lynnfield.

AMDs are better in laptops. They don't heat up as much. AMDs are a good value.

In my Compaq desktop with AMD, we did a cd burning test test against my husband's Dell with Intell. The Compaq smoked the Dell.

Actually there is not that much difference in performance, they are very similar with the exception AMD processors are about $150 - $200 less than Intel, and that is reflected on the price of the PC. This is my fourth AMD based PC and I have not seen any difference between it and the PC's I have used that were Intel based.

Intels are used in most business environments and general workstations. This is because they are better in these environments. The Level 2 cache is higher, increasing the amount of general pupose registers in the processor itself.

AMD processors are used (or should be used) in most gaming or graphics intensive machines. They are better for this purpose because of their architecture and bus speed.

Most processors now are at least Hyper-Transport (HT) so that's not that big of a deal. 64-bit is a slow-moving technology, so you'd be safe not purchasing one now. As for what you should purchase - if you have unlimited money, I would go for the Intel Core Duo or an AMD Athlon XP FX-5 or something of that sort.

depend on the usage for... AMD is much more for gaming while intel lose to AMD during AMD... however, intel can use for work, personal and gaming purpose... so still, intel is much more better... Fixing ur own is much more cheaper den buying from outside...

price wise AMD has the edge. but both are fast CPUs. even now AMD just released their latest chip which is as fast as the Intel Duo Core. but i go for the cheaper one, if both are working fine.

wrong wrong and wrong, core 2 duo is the best and leading the market. don't comment saying you know stuff when you don't. it has been proven with benchmarks to prove that intel core 2 duo x6800 spanks every processor of amd. a normal cpu that is being used by people are the core 2 duos which came out recently. the e6400 is very affordable and fast.
