Ipods because you can better organise your songs. I have used a normal mp3 and a 30g ipod and have to say the ipod was best.
Why..
Because you could quickly navigate between albums, songs etc. and see all of your music. With the normal mp3 the screen was really small and dull and you couldnt find songs as easily. (thats going on a few different types not just one)
Ipods look better quality. I love the black and white silver nanos and the big video ipods. However the first ipod mini did look a bit cheap but ipods have come a long way from the birth of the Mini.
Better sound quality from ipod.
However my ipod has frooze a couple of times but all you do is hold down the middle button and the menu button and its all fixed.
I reccommend IPODS

The "difference" between an iPod and an MP3 player is the difference between Coca-Cola and cola in general. It's just another MP3 player, the #1 MP3 player (brand) around, but still just an MP3 player. Is Coca-Cola better than all other colas? Not necessarily, matter of opinion, and some people deride Coke in favour of Pepsi.
iPods "suck" no more than other players. For all the horror stories you hear about it, you'll hear just as many about other brands and players. I own a MobiBLU Cube, it claims to be Macintosh compatible. However the firmware update software is Windows only, and the firmware craps out every few weeks with regular use. So I have to seek out a Windows machine every month or so just to keep it operational. Reading various web forums, e-mails to MobiBLU get a form letter response if you're lucky to get any attention at all.
You do not need a Macintosh to use the iPod as Fenrir seems to suggest. Apple supports a Windows version of iTunes too. In fact the old packaging used to say something on the lines of "for Macintosh and Windows." But in marketing towards Windows users, they switched the order of the two, (listing Windows first,) which caused something of a small uproar among Mac diehards.
In case someone tries to claim so by the time I post my answer, you are not required to buy music only from the iTunes Music Store. You can import your own CDs, you can download MP3 files off the internet, (download legally, please!) you can purchase from other music services and import them into iTunes. However the iPod (and iTunes) does not support WMA, the music format pushed by Microsoft. But I'm sure a quick web search will reveal many utilities out there that can convert WMA files into MP3 format.
Finally, how do you plan to use your player?
1. Do you also want to use it for non-audio functions? (videos, photos, etc)
2. Do you have a large music collection and want to carry *everyting* with you?
3. Do you need to pick out what you want to listen to at ay time?
4. Do you plan to use it while exercising?
#1 and #2 point towards the (video) iPods.
#3 and #4 point towards a the iPod Nano.
#4 points towards the iPod Shuffle, if #3 isn't important.
There is a capacity gap between the Nano (8GB) and (video) iPod (30GB.) But 8 (or even 4) holds a considerable amount of music. My (non iPod) player is 1GB, but currently holds 270 songs, or about 20 albums.

I have some experience with this... i don't have a very new iPod but the old one i have with the black and white screen and all is great! i think that iPods are definately worth the extra money that you pay for them... they're really easy to use.. one thing that does get kinda annoying though is that you have to use iTunes on your computer but once you get used to that it's great... i had a mp3 player before my iPod and it was horrible.. doesn't even work anymore... it was battery powered so i had to change the batteries like 24/7 but i don't have much experience with the newer mp3's.. actually i've heard good things about the creative ones... so i'd say go with either an iPod or a Creative Labs mp3 player... Creative Labs is usually cheaper.. but i think iPods are higher quality
I'm sorry I had to add this... everyone keeps saying that you have to buy from iTunes to put songs on your iPod which is not true.. you can put your cd's on your iPod.. you just have to put them into iTunes(or import them).. it runs through iTunes.. but Buying music from iTunes is voluntary

An iPod IS an MP3 Player. I would recommend going with an iPod because iTunes, the music program designed especially for use with iPod, is the best on the market.

i like the Creative products better. try the creative zen, its Creatives version of the ipod and i think its better manufactured, ipods are overrated. my dad has one and i dont really like it... when i work out i use my creative MuVo, its about the size of a lighter and you can strap in on your arm... there isnt as much space on there but theres enough room to have enough to listen to for a workout.
also Creative allows you to put your songs in wma, a 64bit wma is the same sound quality as a 128bit mp3 so you can fit twice as many songs as you could on the ipod.

Ipod is an MP3 player. But don't get one. They suck and they break and they are over priced.

hi i have a mp3 player.
I wanted a ipod and went to buy one and thankfully a nice lady asked me some good questions
eg
the ipod you have to download music via itunes.
i have about 300+ songs on my computer which i got from napster and other places and i can not import them from puter to ipod.
and my sandisk has a radio and it runs on 1 AAA battery.
the ipod has a internal battery and once it runs out you can't replace it or you have to recharge it.
so you have to think about what you want to use it for.

it depends on what songs you listen to and when. if you like to choose what song to listwn to easily, get the iPod. you can locate by song, artist, genre or album. you can also play games on them and on som watch videos. mp3 players are for people with 50 songs or less who like a compact, low-mantinence inexpensive things. many of my friends have iPods, many have mp3 players. i like iPods better, they are really convenient.
