Go to www.videolan.org and download VLC Media Player. You will not have to worry about almost every avi's different codecs. VLC has them built in already, and can play most media.

this is the default way windows media player opens. if you want a smaller window click the switch to skin mode button in the lower right corner. it will shrink down and if u want even smaller you will notice a compact button in the lower right which shrinks it even more

Sounds like your graphics card. How old is your computer? Does it show bits and pieces of a video? Do you have dial up? That could be the problem.

search limewire for "ace mega codecs pack" that will sort out the bumth of ya problem vlc player and divx player are also useful

what kind (avi, wmv, etc) of video file is it? it might just be a codec problem
