and you need it to proof you weren't at fault, how can you obtain it? file something in court? or just go there and ask? and how long normally they saved those?

You could try to get a court order (subpoena) to get it. And most tapes are taped over in 24-48 hours, so if you did not request it within that time you will be out of luck.

You can go there and ask. You could ask the police to ask for it. most places keep the tape a week or more. some places rotate two or three tapes every 24 hours.
