Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. Affecting at least 5-8% of all pregnancies, it is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision are important symptoms; however, some women with rapidly advancing disease report few symptoms.

Typically, preeclampsia occurs after 20 weeks gestation (in the late 2nd or 3rd trimesters or middle to late pregnancy), though it can occur earlier. Proper prenatal care is essential to diagnose and manage preeclampsia. Preeclampsia, Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) and toxemia are closely related conditions. HELLP Syndrome and eclampsia are other manifestations of the same syndrome. It is important to note that research shows that more women die from preeclampsia than eclampsia and one is not necessarily more serious than the other.

I had it with both of my pregnancies. Edema, which is swellinging the feet and legs and hands. High blood pressure. Headaches and pains in your right side. Also protein in your urine. If you suspect you are having any of these symptoms call your doctor immediately. They should have some kind of on-call/after hours nurse or doctor. You can experience preeclampsia as early as 20 weeks. The only way to stop it once it is in full force is delivery of the baby so best to catch it early.

Good Luck!!!!

I have pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, and am being watched for symptoms of pre-eclampsia. My perinatologist told me to call his office immediately if I have any of the following symptoms, which indicate onset of pre-eclampsia:

1) Blinding headache with white spots in vision that is not relieved with Tylenol

2) Sharp, unrelenting pain underneath ribs on right-hand side

3) Sudden and pronounced swelling of ankles, or face and hands, different than normal swelling of ankles

You yourself will not be able to tell if your BP is high or not, so make sure your doc keeps an eye on it for you!

Good luck!
