american league has the designated hitter, someone who hits for the pitcher. usually it's someone who can't field very well. National league has the pitcher hitting (who usually bunts if there is a man on)

The National League was formed around 1876, and was the first major league. The American League was formed in 1901 to compete directly with the National League. In 1903 the two leagues agreed to have their respective champions face each other in a playoff series to determine the ultimate champion, this playoff became known as the World Series. The two leagues then decided to co-exist with each other, and agreed to appoint a comissioner (like a president) to run the two leagues under the name "Major League Baseball".

The only real difference in rules is that the American League uses a "designated hitter" who goes to bat instead of the pitcher, and is not used in the field. In the National League there is no such player, the pitcher has to bat also.

The American League uses a designated hitter for the pitcher so he doesn't have to hit and the National does not. Also Detroit has always sucked.
