I'm not a hardware buff so it might just be a misunderstanding.

Old computer runs great, usually good without any probs. for a month or two. Then all of a sudden it freezes then reboots itself, before it freezes there's a clicking noise coming from the comp. which I'm pretty sure the clicking is coming from or some way connected to the hard drive. When I hear that noise I know the computer is about to crash - freeze, then reboot itself. After it reboots it detects no hard drive, tried rebooting but still no hard drive detected. This doesn't happen to often, when it does I usually have to format hard drive and install everything.
I noticed by unplugging the ribbon from the hard drive and then pluggng it back, that it fixes this odd prob., runs great for a month. When it happens again I just reconnect the hard drive. My cpu temp is fine, all new cables and ribbons. New 80gig hard drive, had 256mb/added 512ram, its been a prob for 3yrs beside that it runs great. any idea?

I agree, but the cpu might be giving me this prob. but when my cpu is usually no more than 48c
I had it up to 74c and the cpu was cold when I touch the cpu.

The hard disk drive is failing. Back up your data then get a new hard drive.

If the hard drive is new, go to the manufacturer's website for the hard drive. They will have a program that can check each sector for bad spots.

A clicking sound could be two things: The heads of the hard drive sticking (usually once the HD is running for awhile and has become hot) or the Power Supply is going. Clicking sounds can be the capacitor. Try replacing the Power Supply.

Two things can cause a freeze and reboot: Bad Power Supply or the CPU is getting too hot or going bad. Again, replace the Power Supply first, it is the cheaper option.

That sound is usually a sign of impending hard drive doom, but you say it is a new drive? Did you always have this problem with this drive, or did you have this problem with a previous drive, also?

If this problem has occurred with different drives, and you've swapped out drives and cables already, it might have to do with something else in your computer, namely:

(1) Power Supply -- bad or weak power can cause instability with all kinds of things.
(2) Motherboard -- the I/O (including drive logic) chips might be going bad. This will require a new motherboard.
(3) Insufficient drive cooling -- you may need more fans, and that means sucking air IN and blowing air OUT.

Strange.

Perhaps the older motherboard can't handle the newer large capacity drive. Is the hard drive actually doing the ticking or something else? The ticking may be leaky capacitors on the motherboard as well.

Good Luck

There can be another problem. It may be due to your RAM. Open the case of your computer. Remove the RAM, clean it and also clean the RAM socket. Put it once again in that socket or the one just next to it, and then boot your computer. Just try it. It may work.
