Both, because Immigrant adopt "American" tradition which more often then not were brought to this nation be previous immigrants and then new immigrants bring new customs that get adopted by the nation.

Siyo If you truly believe in what you say,then perhaps you can tell me which Native American language you have learned to speak? Which of the cultural ways and laws that were here before the great European immigration do you follow? What about your parents? Grandparents? If they and you havent yet assimilated how can you expect others to do so?
