pppoe is what computers use to connect to DSL internet so it should be the same thing. DSL internet providers use pppoe to log in their network where as cable internet doesn't use pppoe. You have to have a user name and password to connect to DSL internet providers. Router's can store that info in its memory so you don't have to log in (if you have a router connected to your computer).
