Ipods are built solid and have the best warranty service out there.

Before you buy, go to an apple store for about 30 minutes. Stand by the Genuis bar, and check out how easy it is for people to swap out and get a new one if something goes wrong.

you can't go wrong with either the creative zen, or the samsung. yahoo tech voted the zen as the top mp3 player for purchase. those can really take a beating and still survive. my first mp3 player was the creative jukebox 2. and would you believe...it STILL WORKS, even though it's been thrown in my closet somewhere due to it being sooo outdated. that thing outlasted not one, but TWO ipods i owned. i do NOT recommend those trendy pieces of sh!t. they just break down in less than 1 year. i know, i went through them myself. if you can hold out til christmas time, microsoft is coming out with their own mp3 player called the Zune. it should be AWESOME...wifi connection and ALL!! oh and incredibly large display!! check it out on a search in yahoo. i guarantee you'll be impressed with the spec sheet.

One of my Creative has been through the wash and still ticking... The other Creative and my Ipod only work with the software that came with them. No big deal unless you don't like to use that particular software. I am also not thrilled about having to keep up with 2 identical databases of over 16,000 songs... It's tedious and takes too much time to catalog a new CD. I recommend anything that looks like a removable drive to the Operating System when you plug it in. That way you can use whichever software you want, including third-party ones like MP3 Monkey.

I have a Samsung YP-T7, which is a 1GB solid-state player (no hard drive to break). I've had it for almost a year and have dropped it and banged it everywhere, but it shows NO signs of wear. Plus, it's tiny and lightweight and the battery lasts a really long time between charges.

i've got a creative which died after 1.5yrs.. could be an unusual case... but i got a samsung now... its quite satisfying and user friendly,,,, battery last really long as well.

wanted an ipod cuz its flashier... my cousin's mini is still surviving... so i think its quite lasting. hehe.
