Air is injected into the rear of the chicken and the feathers are blown off. Just kidding.

First they are killed, I'll skip how that's done to spare the squeemish.

Next they are conveyed by a shackle conveyor (hanging by their feet) through a bath of hot water. This loosens the feathers from the skin.

The feather plucking machines are known as "pickers" The picking machines have hundreds of rubber fingers mounted to rotating drums. The picker fingers rub the feathers off the chickens as they pass through the machines. Usually and at the modern processing speeds the birds must pass through several of these machines in sequence to complete the job.

Water spray washes the feathers out of the machines into an open trench drain where the feathers are then flumed out of the plant to a separator screen.

Google search "Stork Gamco, Meyn or Johnson Equipment, They all make "Picking machines"

They are done by hand. Silver: the typical breed of chicken used in the commercial industry is the cornish X....they do not have a life span of 7 years. They are raised for meat and develop huge health problems if allowed to live longer than a few months.
