For example, if I called someone a "d!ck" that would mean they are pretty mean.
However if I called someone a "penis" it would imply that they are kind of magoo like.

Well, what you are saying is not so much different meanings (because they mean exactly the same male organ) but rather different connotations. Connotations come along due to the way the word is used in society and therefore the mental picture that it invokes. Like "f*cking", "sleeping together" and "making love" - exactly the same activity but totally different mental pictures.

Frankly I think it is the beauty of the language, really. What a bleak world it would be with only 1 word for happy (glad, elated, joyous) or love (cherish, adore).
