We started my son on rice cereal 2 weeks ago. Last week we moved to oatmeal when he tolerated the rice fine. He's still gobbling it all up, so we're planning to move to stage 1 foods soon. He is currently just getting cereal once a day. 2 things: do I need to increase the number of times he eats solids per day and do I need to keep giving cereal at the same time I am giving him veggies or fruits?

Definitely! You should continue the cereal along with the veggies and fruits that he's trying next. It's all about building his diet. You try a food alone for a while, to make sure that he doesn't have any allergic reactions to it. If he doesn't, then that's one food added to his diet. If he's fine with rice cereal, then start giving him rice cereal and a new veggie or fruit. If he has a reaction then you know it wasn't from the cereal, since he didn't have a reaction to it when he tried it before. As for increasing the solids - go for it! If he's tolerating solid foods well, then go ahead give them to him a couple times a day. You're not hurting him - just adding to his diet. When I first started feeding my son solids, he would have cereal for breakfast, along with a fruit. He'd have veggies and fruit for lunch, and veggies, fruit and cereal for dinner. His doctor said that this was absolutely fine. Sounds like you're doing a great job already! I wish you luck with the rest of the food "trials." Just wait until he gets old enough to decide what he will eat and won't eat during the day. It's not too much fun!! Haha. Good luck!

The best thing to do is ask your doctor. I am going to assume your son is about five or six months old. If he weighs about 15 pounds or so he should be eating about 37 ounces of milk a day. If he can still eat one or two servings with that then it is okay. You don't want to lower his intake of formula though, if he cannot eat both formula and solids then he isn't ready and just needs to wait until his appetite is a little bigger. If you start on stage one foods it is okay. All you need to do is feed the same kind of food for a week, to make sure he doesn't get any allergies or anything. Again, I suggest asking his doctor on the next well baby visit. Good luck!

I would say go ahead and feed the baby! If he is handling the cereal good then try something "easy" for the stage 1 food.... Fruit is always a safety.

Babies are different in a lot of ways. Some are picky and some are not. I learned that if I allowed my daughter to try different foods, she would not be such a picky eater later on. My baby girl is now 5 and LOVES veggies... not much of a meat eater but veggies are good for little ones too

good luck

Depending on the age of the child, 3 to 6 months twice a day cereal w/fruit (only after the vegetables have been introduced) and once a day vegetables. If the child is 6 months and older I would give cereal once a day and other types of baby foods the other parts of the day.

You've left out a key piece of info... How old is your son? I'm guessing 6 months?! You should continue the cereal for a few months... regardless of whether you're giving him veggies or fruits. The cereal provides the iron & zinc that he needs. Your pediatrician should be advising you of what & how often to give him. I would continue the cereal both morning & night for a few months. You could mix it with his fruits of veggies, but get it into him. Also try Barley and alternate between all of them.
Depending on his age, he can get not only cereal, but fruits and veggies stage 1... as well as formula or breastmilk. You should speak to your pediatrician and have them give you a guideline of what to feed and when.

You can keep on giving him so cereal. Each babie is diffrent and stop eating cereal at diffrent times. When i was doing daycare i would mix some cereal with their fruit. Daycares are on this thing called the food program. That prgram tells you how much and what you should give to each child. Also make sure you check with your doctor as well. this website has helped alot of my daycare parents http://www.westonaprice.org/children/feeding.html

Yup, keep the cereal in his diet every day. One of the food groups!! Add the fruits first, by mixing some in his cereal. He'll love it. And yes, you can add more solids twice a day. Just keep his formula included at each meal.

My twin girls eat oakmeal cereal once a day. At 11AM. I add pears, applesauce, prune and apples, banannas or banannas and strawberries. And, I use water, not milk. Now, I use water because this is the only way my girls will drink water. They do not like water. Just milk. But, Baby B does like applejuice (2oz) with water (2oz).

I started my twins on stage 1 foods at 6 months, then stage 2 foods at 8 months and now they are on stage 3 foods, which they are not big fans of(too chunky for their taste) at 10 months of age.

You just have to do what you think is right for your son and when you think he is ready for each stage. Just 'test the water's so to speak.

Hope this has helped you.. :-)

I would give him cereal for the first meal and for lunch a veggie and a fruit and the same for the next one or two meals for that day, just like you would for your self.
Hope this helps, good luck
