Just started doing the butterfly stroke, and it was hard. I couldn't even do a complete lap. I did half lap but with broken/ugly stroke. What are some basic techniques for fly that I can train myself on? Thanks.

keep your legs together and make a dolphine kick. 2 soft kicks inbetween each stroke but once you take that stroke do a big strong kick and swing your arms over and pull through the water. keep your head down in the stroke. breathe every other stroke. pulling through the water is very important it whats gonna make you move so take big strong pulls then just repeat the process. butterfly can take awhile to learn and to get the hang of. make sure you got the hang of the dolphine kick because if you dont its gonna really be hard to do butterfly . the kick is was gets you up and out of the water so you can swing your arms over. if you dont have a strong kick your arms will just be skimming or pushing the water at your sides and your arms and you will get tired really fast. make sure your arms are straite when you go to take your stroke and not square or uneven like the waterpolo players do it. haha. o ya and by the way when you go to breathe dont lift your head all the way out of the water. your legs will sink when you do that and youll be dragging your feet. instead just lift your chin to breathe at the surface of the water.

hope this works for you

Grab a kickboard and practice your dolphin kick over and over again. Work on making your kick more flexible and much more stronger. Learn how to synchronize your kick with your arm movement. I did better with arm movements when I didn't take many breaths, so you should work on breathing technique as well. Work on arm circles...making arm rotations flexible and stronger. Good luck!!
