The last part of your post makes no sense whatsoever. So I'm not going to waste my time trying to explain the difference to you. If you honestly don't know.
For the friend part of your question, I look for someone who does not seem bitter. Someone who isn't easily shocked.
Someone who isn't really preppy, someone who does not seem influenced by the media. Someone who is passionate and has something to say. Someone..different.
It's hard to tell though, what people are really like, and what is just a front. Most people are really the same.
Like you said it's really about having things in common and similar life events/viewpoints.
Although not having that doesn't necessarily make for a bad friendship..
What do you want out of a friendship? What do you mean by personal aspects you are not privy to? Are you being left out and other's are being told secrets etc? What kind of info?
I don't like people who are too focussed on themselves so I would avoid these kind of people, personally.

The older you are, the harder it is to have common ground with those your own age. Go back to school, or enrol in some classes. In that environment, you will find something to talk about, and also meet and develop another circle of acquaintances.
Dont be too earnest , nor try too hard to find a friend. Like what they say " If you want a friend, just be one"

I think now days it's extremely rare to find a genuine friend.
98% of the time, people are only looking out for themselves.
You shouldn't stress your mind trying thinking about why it so hard to click w/ others and trying to find your self at there level either personally or professionally. I think that went it comes down to it; family is all you really have and if your blessed enough to have a family you acctually get along with/ be thankful for them and especially for the blessing of your son. (He will probably end up being your best friend at the end).

I look for a grounded down to earth person with sincerity and compassion and a great sense of humor. Its OK that we don,t share all of the same interests as long as we can talk and laugh and trust one another its good.

That seems to happen more with women and girls than with men. I always look for people that are fun to be with, that like to laugh and are kind to others, that share a common ground with me, such as quilting or walking....into taking classes............and that like to go to things not just sit and talk. I enjoy concerts, movies, bingo and that type of thing. good luck

I look for someone who is not constantly talking about themselves. I find they are very selfish. I like someone who likes to laugh and cut up and just act silly.
