Because our parents were right about everything else....like going to sleep if you're tired, or eating when you're hungry, etc. We trust them for good reason. Why even consider that they can be wrong with govt or religion?

Because I would rather believe in God and find out I was wrong than not believe in Him and find out I was wrong. Why are so many people brainwashed into believing that there is no plan for us and the world? Why do some people believe they are so smart they can say God doesn't exist? If 85% of the people polled during exit polls in the last election say the believe in God, does that not make us a nation that truely does trust in God?

Because everytime government or the church brainwashes someone into become another person who donates money to their cause, it gives positive feedback to continue the practice.
Pavlov proved that giving rewards reinforces behavior.
Not that I'm trying to compare government and religion to dogs but... if the shoe fits.

I wouldn't call it brain washing, but people are limited by their environment and the influence exerted on them by the people they associate with. Simply... they know nothing else. Were they open minded and exposed to varying points of view they could come up with their own thoughts. It is work and most folks are to lazy to look for the real answers.
