Most ancient societies and to a lesser extent are male dominated. Since religion and concept of god are man-made belief systems to answer the unanswerable questions of the time, it's only logical that most deities will be male since males are the dominant factor both in the home and in society at large.

It's a good question. I haven't heard a really reasonable answer.
It reminds me of the time I followed a car into work during rush hour. For most of the drive, I was only close enough to read the large letters on the bumper sticker. They said "GOD IS COMING..." Finally we got stopped at a light, and I was able to read the rest of the message. It said, "and she is pissed!"
I wish I were as simple as some of your respondents say--just read the bible! Unfortunately, I don't buy what it sells.

Not all religions treat the almighty as Him.
There are a number of powerful female Goddesses in many major religions (just not Christianity, Judaism and Islam).

It's mostly a matter of preference. The ancient Hebrews would never have followed a woman, so the priests referred to God as male. In fact, because God is neither male nor female, it would be just as accurate to say "Her".

I am a Jew so i don't believe in the bible. but in my temple we dont refer to G-d as him we refer to G-d as G-d. in My belief refering to G-d as a male is only like picturing G-d which to me is like praying to an idol which is breaking one of the Ten Commandments

The Almighty is God. God is a man. God made man like he himself looks. When man was sleeping he took a rib bone and made woman. That is also why men have one less rib then woman.

Thumbs-up for asking something I've always wondered about!
(Why hasn't "God" ever been pondered as Female?)
