At first I just said "Yeah", but then I muttered something like, what if you think it's a mirage but it isn't?

We were having a backyard dinner party. One of the caterers heard me say that, and whispered these words in my face: "If you think it's a mirage and it isn't, then it really isn't a mirage, and the words 'Every mirage is real' don't apply."

I was dumbstruck. Of course! Every mirage IS real! I came away a far different person, more avid and earnest...

But lately I've thought more on this, and have decided to ask people at Yahoo! Answers, cause this is the place where I turn to for guidance.

Also, I was wondering, does this apply to chimeras?

If I understand the question (and am not overanalyzing it) I would tend to agree with the caterer. If something is not actually a mirage, then it is thrown out of the survey and it makes no difference if it is real or not, we are only dealing with REAL mirages. Even if you were to say there were actually no real mirages, those things are thrown out as they only appear to be mirages. There comes a point at which you must decide for yourself whether or not a mirage is tangiable or intangiable. If intangiable, then it is hard to prove that it is not a mirage so then, all mirages are real! Neat question, makes you think.

A mirage is by definition real; it's the content to the mirage that is not. Likewise a belief is real if you are really believing it, whereas the object of your belief may or may not be real.

Your pain is real too. But nobody else can feel it. A mirage is by definition real, and you just figured that out recently, at a dinner party? Lord have mercy.

Hmmm, I would think so. Our perceptions of this world are all that we have to go by, and they could be completely off. What if mirages are the only thing that are real?
