there was an experiment done with mice where identical groups were divided up and one group got all they wanted to eat and the other had to perform and even then did not always get enough. The ones who got fed all they would eat eventually died out. That may have a bearing here since the intelligent often want for naught, and so the pop might keep getting less inteligent, note SAT scores starting in the early 60's and remember they have even made them easier.

Okay.....we all know it doesnt take brains to get laid. So although the general population does not require smarts to reproduce, I do think it needs to be mentioned that it requires serious smarts of all kinds, not to mention wits, and good humor to raise a decent, smart, well rounded child. Might as well go with the cliche' -
It takes an entire Village to raise a child.

stupid is as stupid does? no, that doesn't work....well, yes, we have to be just a little insane to have kids, because when we're breeding we don't take into account all of the....lovely things our kids can do. Like pulling a box of muffin mix out of the pantry, a tub of butter out of the fridge, and tipping over the trash - and turning the kitchen into their own special work of art!

No - but remember you don't have to be smart to do THAT; it's just that the "smarts" know enough to put a cap on it - I don't mean that they don't "practice" but they're smart enough to "just practice" -- Does that make any sense?
