The other night I had to walk across campus (which is huge) alone at night, so I called campus security and had them send over two student volunteers, called Safewalkers, to walk me to my apartment. They always send one guy and one girl. I hadn't even been drinking (AT ALL) so we just made small talk as we walked. That was last week. Today a new edition of the student newspaper came out, and there is a "shout out" from the guy who safe-walked me home asking me out on a date. It doesn't have my name, but it has identifying information that makes it clear it's about me and it's from him. I'm really creeped out! I thought Safewalk was supposed to be a safe thing, but now there are guys using it to pick up girls? What if I need to be safewalked again? Can I really trust the Safewalkers not to perve on me? Am I over-reacting, or was it inappropriate of him to put that in the school newspaper?

That was totally inappropriate. You need to find someone to talk to, the faculty member in charge of the safewalk program or your academic adviser.

I would compose a letter to be published back, not focusing on turning him down but about the inappropriateness of his letter.

I agree that was inappropriate, esp. since that guy had to ask you thru a newspaper...how lame is that? Anyway, just like the other person advised, go to the main person who manages safewalk and tell them about how you felt over the whole situation. They really need to enforce some rules about the people who volunteer and maybe even go as far as having the safewalkers fingerprinted to ensure they're safe to be around. And I'm sure there are guidelines safewalkers are supposed to follow. Good luck!

You are overacting a little bit as you did get home safely and I sure he did it because he was to shy to do it at the end of the walk which would of been ok.
but it was inappropriate for him to put it in the school paper while being related to the safe walk group so I talk to security and the campus administration about it and how it mad you feel.

I also would not stop using safe walk over this as the kind of guys who assault women are not the volunteer types.

Personally If I blew the chance to ask out some one I was interested in I would continue to volunteer and hope to see her again

It is a fine line because it is a STUDENT volunteer. Had it been a security guard then he was crossing the line because they can not have any personal relationships with students. But the student-worker is not held to this standard. However, if the student is acting in a way that is making you uncomfortable, he should be reported and terminated. He is not criminally liable but is not meeting the requirments of his job.
