I've been wanting a myspace but I know my sister won't let me. Can people really get stalked by using it? Or like in the news, where girls get raped for exposing too much information? I mean, I won't do anything like that...but can people get to yours even if you put it on private? She thinks it's a bad idea to meet "friends"...but I am not using it to meet comple strangers...just for people that I actually know personally... Is MySpace really dangerous as people say it is?

No it is NOT dangerous, some of the people using it make it dangerous for their self. Do NOT post your private information on the Internet anywhere it's not just myspace. You either use a fake name, or only your first name, you can put the state you live in but don't list your city. Set your profile on there to private, then NO one can view your profile unless you add them to your friends list on there. NEVER meet anyone off the internet you can talk to them and become friends with them on the internet but don't met them in person if you don't already know them.
It's not just myspace that people choose to give out their personal information at, there are several websites people do that on including yahoo. People have the ability to not put their self in dangerous situations like that by not putting their personal information on the internet at all.
Things to make it safe for you:
1.) Set your account to private. So only people who are your friends can see your profile.
2.) Use a fake name on there or ONLY use your first name. Even if your account is set to private.
3.) NEVER list the city in which you live. You can list the state.
4.) Never tell anyone on there which school you go to.
5.) Never post your parents names, any phone numbers (they can do cross refferences and get your address),Never add anyone to your friends list that you don't know personaly, Never give away information that might help a person locate you things such as names of places,/historical landmarks, or anything.
6.) If you choose to add people that you don't know to your list then you can be friends with them only on the internet. NEVER meet them in person. It don't mater how long you talk to them you still don't give them any personal information about you. Cause you never know if they are who they say they are even if they have pictures.
7.)NEVER MEET ANYONE OFF THE INTERNET!!!!!

everything now-a-days is dangerous. you can walk outside and its dangerous. myspace is like any other website. of course if you put too much information up there, then yes, it can be more of a risk for you as well as others you know. but you can always set your profile to private in which only "hackers" will know how to view your page. and if they are hackers, then they can destroy a lot of things and a lot of people. so tell ur sister to chill out. don't have a cow. if she was really worried, she would hire you a body guard. even schools nowadays are unsafe with all the kids shooting. so get ur page. and have fun.

There are a lot of great answers to this question. But just to shorten it down and get to the jest of it.

The truth is how dangerous Myspace is going to depend on you.
There have been a lot of bad cases that have occured to people who use myspace but its also realistic to realize that much of your security depends on how much of yourself you expose on the interent.

I didnt get a myspace until my senior year of highschool, i got it cuz its a great way for me to keep intouch with soem of my friends. I personally try an limit my info, the only people allowed to view my myspace are my friends, but even then i get a lot of requests from other people to view my myspace but i always reject those offers. As for me being afraid that someone will see my myspace... i try and limit my info, for instance if someone were to go on my page i dont have my adress, e-mail or phone number on there. I make sure that there is no way to contact me. I have a limited of one photo of me and thats iwth a group.

Be Careful.

I dont understand Myspace . I chose to communicate with my family and friends the old fashioned way - phone and Email or just visiting them. I find the internet is not a very private place and would not share any personal information on something like Myspace.

MySpace can be dangerous for those who reveal too much information about themselves - just mentioning the name of your school may give away too much information to a predator. If you only put general info on your page, you will be fine.

MySpace is a ZOO.

you wouldn't wander around a Zoo that had no bars or cages unprotected would you?

when you're ready, your sister, or an adult in your family will show you how to visit the Zoo without getting bitten by the animals.

until your sister decides you're ready, be patient.

hang out in safe places like this one.

and make sure she knows everywhere you DO visit.

this will help her keep you safe.

it will also let her know that she can trust you.

that's part of being ready for the Zoo.

good luck, and be safe.

Its not bad f you are wise and be smart about it, dont give out personal info and dont meet people from it. If your a teen dnt list what school you go to. Dont ever asume that any one you talk to is who they say they are (again like if you are a teen and they say they are too)
Its like anythin else on the net just be careful and you should be fine

Well it depends....if you are on there telling all of your personal information something as simple as what school you go to...is dangerous....this is my opinion on any program...not just myspace....it can be any program...or any personal information you are at risk...MY OPINION!!

my neice is on myspace...she seems to love it as she has her school friends on there..when she gets on my computer....she knows that i have a program on my computer that it "records" every key that is ever hit on my computer even snaps pictures of the screens that she looks at...not as a nosey thing...but for her safety, as well i want to monitor what people are doing on my computer...as lots of people gets on it..so it is just a tool for me to know what she and others is doing on the computer....
