Have you ever gone to listen to a tune you haven't played in a while, and discovered it was gone? Over the years I've had quite a few tracks simply dissappear from my collection. Because I have quite a few songs, some can go unlistened to for months or even years, but I know I didn't delete them, they're simply gone. Just curius whether this happens to other people.

Are you sure you did not delete the file?
Files to my best of knowledge do not leave media libraries on their own unless you have set them to do so.

Try scanning your computer for media files.

i've *lost* files, that's true - moved from one computer (e.g. my desktop that hasn't been turned on in about a month) to another (new laptop - simply far quieter and more convenient) and only copied over a subset of my mp3s ... realising now i've forgotten some and am hurting for them... will enjoy them even more once they're back though! (if i ever remember to power up the desktop and get copying again)

files dont simply disappear mate. if they did it would be affecting more than just your documents. maybe they're in a different folder to what you think. perhaps you burned them on cd and deleted them "temporarily" when you needed space and forgot to copy back. perhaps having them is a big mental illusion / false memory, and you were just hearing them a lot on the radio / CD player back then and they never made it into the PC. Or it could be that you either have a virus or some kind of trojan that, through some mechanism, is leading to files being deleted. It might be a new record industry ruse, and therefore it targets only mp3s. But if you're convinced of this, i'd do a carpet bombing search and eradication for viruses and spyware through all available channels, make sure the firewall was working right, and then put a startup and a screensaver password on my pc and make sure i "locked the screen" every time i walked away in case e.g. a marauding little brother was deleting them in spite.

No. You might have deleted the file it was in leading to the file disappearing.
