"Nikita is a Russian *male* name. (The Soviet leader during the 1950s was Nikita Kruschev.) However, I think that Elton's lyricist Bernie Taupin envisioned Nikita as a woman. In fact, the music video depicts Nikita as a female Soviet border guard, while Elton portrays a Western (i.e, West European or American) photographer who is infatuated with her. Not surprisingly, then, "Nikita" is a song that comes out of the Cold War. Bernie's lyrics long for a time when the Cold War might come to an end and the people of the East and West might come together in friendship. Incidentally, when Elton recently got his Kennedy Center Honor in Washington DC this past December, then Secretary of State Colin Powell rememembered how much the song meant to him during the 1980s as a military leader."

Maybe it inspired Colin Powell to write the song and dance about "Weapons of Mass Destruction"
