you can probably find a pretty good exhaust kit for under 300...you could also change the air filter to a k&n or fram air-hog and pull the sound baffle out of the air box inlet tube. that thing robs a lot of air and it'l make your car sound a little sportier. chips from superchips.com should also be in your budget.

Take a high-performance driving school. Whether you ever decide to go in for competition driving or just want to be safer and more in control in everyday use, it's the single best thing you can do not only for your current car, but for every car you drive from now on.
The Sports Car Club of America hosts high-performance driving events that are ideal for newcomers to the racetrack. They're geared towards giving you the skills and control techniques you need to be competent and aware behind the wheel. They are also more fun than just about anything you can do in a moving car (though I used to have this girlfriend who... never mind :-).
Check the link in the Sources field to find out which SCCA region you're in. Each of the local regions hosts their own driving events, at racetracks around the country. And even if the SCCA hasn't set up one near you, somebody in the club will know of another organization that has track days and instructors.
The first time you have an emergency on the road and you keep the car off the guardrail or out of the ditch, you'll realize it's even more than a lot of fun. My race and rally experience has saved me from serious incidents on the street several times, whether through looking ahead and being able to avoid trouble, or through knowing what my car was going to do in a sudden change in grip or adhesion.

Do what you want but in my experience, cars are best left the way the manufacturer built them. This is especially true with economy cars. Spend your money of fuel. If you live in a hot place like Arizona, spend some cash on window tint.
