Look up Sir France Drake. I say this because Mr. Drake actually discovered the western coastal line of the US [IE: CA] way before any other exploreres did, even though he did not realize where ther heck he was at the time.
You could do a simple search online about Christopher Columbus and I'm sure you'd dredge up all sorts of stuff you can use in class. Good Luck!

some little facts
- sailed for portugal
- then sailed for Isabel and Ferdinand in Spain
- with Spain he did the famous voyage to the Americas (he actually wanted to find a route to Asia, but he stumbled upon America- thinking that America was Asia)
