I can't afford to be a big tipper, but I usually try to tip at least 20%. I used to be a waitress, so I know how hard it can be, but if the service is really bad, leave a penny. Leaving a penny is worse than no tip at all to a waitress, it's actually an insult. Just a penny lets them know that you didn't just 'forget'.
Just a note to El Whatevero...the waitress is the one who does all the running and getting whatever it is you want and they mainly rely on tips for their income. As the other woman said, waitresses only make two-something and hour, whereas the cook usually makes a fairly decent wage. Not to mention, if you feel so inclined, you can always tip the cook too, but I have a feeling you're way too cheap for that! I once got a $100 tip, because of the cook and my service...the cook got a $300 tip from the same guy! Alot of times the cook can't get the order right and guess who it gets taken out on? The waitress!!

I'm a big tipper. I can't help it. I guess once you've been a waitress working through college, you so sympathize with your own server. And if they do a fantastic job, why not praise them for it!! Plus......I don't think everyone realizes that servers don't get minimum wage. People often approach tipping as, "Well she was just doing her job. She's payed to do this.......why tip?" Seriously.......servers make their money off of the tips. Not to mention.......that where I worked.......we had to declare 10% of our earnings each night which was then split up between the cooks and busboys. So not all of the money in the tip goes to the server. I suppose when I keep all of this in mind, I realize that the cost of the meal is just part of what I'm paying for, so I have no problem in leaving a substantial tip that I know will cover the work of my server as all of the people "behind the scenes." How do we get everyone to realize how important this is??

I think so, usually leave $5.00 no matter how small the bill is. But if the bill requires more than $5.00 for 15% - then I'll leave the 15% or even 20%. I know that most waitresses do not have health insurance or other such benefits and I also know they only make about $2.65 an hour from their employer...even in the year 2006.

I'm not much of a tipper $2or3 is ussualy about it . if the service is very bad then 2cents in a glass of water turned upside down. if extremily bad then lots of honey or suger is added.
I don't believe in ,a gift from me to you should be taxed as income.

$2...$3 tops!
I'm cheap!
no matter what the price of the meal was...its 2 or 3 dollars, thats it!
and why is it that we tip the person who brings the food to the table, why not the cook? they went thru more work! they should get the tip!

Depends on the service I receive. If it is good then yes but if it is not then I still will give them something.
