Back during the times of the Salem Witch Trials people would tie rocks to women and throw them into wells or deep lakes. If they stayed on the bottom then they were justified in calling them a witch. IF they floated to the top (usually dead by the way) then they were not the witches they were believed to be.

Witches, however, were believed to surpass others..in scope of thier herbal magic..Many were rumored to be witches or were persecuted as much of the lore regarding there powers was a blend of fiction and fact...Through out the years witches would have there legs tied and hands tied together and put in a sack tied at the top if it was a real witch she would float upon the water and if she was not she would sink to the bottom and die her watery death.

It means somebody can not remember the line from the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." If she floats then she is a witch because she is as light as a duck and that means she is made out of wood which is something we burn like witches.

This refers to the old tradition of witch dunking. They would strap supposed witches to a chair, and submerge them under water for a long time. If she cam up and was still breathing, or floated, she was a witch. If she drowned under the water, she was not a witch, but also did not get a very good prize for winning. Stupid, but it really happened.

goes back to the salem witch trials..it was a test to determine if a woman was a witch or not- it was a catch 22- there is no way for a woman to win..they would tie her to a long pole called a dunking stool, then they would dunk her under the water..if she floated up or swam up then she was a witch and was fished out of the water and hung or burned alive - if however she stayed under the water and drowned that meant she was not a witch and pure..but of course the poor girl was dead either way.

Ever seen Wizard of Oz??? Witches melt in water. So if she floats she can't be a witch. If she drowns or melts then shes a witch.

One of the "tests" to see if a woman was a witch was to dunk her in water. If she would float, she was a witch - people sink. If they sank (and drowned), then they were not a witch. Therefore, they were innocent (but dead).
Dontcha miss the good ole days?

It was during the witch burning times. They'd dunk a person and if they floated they weren't a witch, but i believed they'd drown anyway

its a test. Bind and weight down a witch throw her in a lake if she sinks she is a witch. If she floats then god saved her so she is not a witch. Actually if she floated they thought it was the devil that saved her and they burned her at the stake. If she sank and drowned then she was innocent of witchcraft.
