if you can easily gain access to your chimney try dropping a weighted line down it with a small spiky bush tied to the other end and dragging it down

From experience, I can tell you. Hire a chimney sweep. Look in your local yellow pages. It is a VERY messy job!!! It you aren't careful, the soot will get all over your house, not just the few feet in front of it.
It's good that you're getting it cleaned. My chimney caught on fire a few years ago and we had to rebuild half the house.

Sometimes you just need to burn something and it will clean your chimney out for you. We have a fireplace and we burn potatoe peels ever so often. This gets the crisso build up out. There is also a special "log" that you can buy at any discount store. As an added bonus, you don't get dirty!

I was going to say get a chimney sweep to do it, but if you want to do it yourself, look for broom or brush specialists in the phone book or on the web.

Here is a site.....there are many out there. If you haven't had your chimney cleaned in a while, it may be worth the extra cost and peace of mind to have it professionally done.

it actually depends on the lining of your fireplace............Some brushes are hard, while some are made of nylon....You could scratch off the lining protection with a hard brush if it is the wrong
size and wrong kind....
