No one knows. It is possible and scientists and archaeologists are still searching and have their own theories. Some people believe that it was simply a story, with varying reasons as to why they believe that. Others believe that it was real. It's not impossible for someone back then to be incredibly intelligent. The same argument could be used for the Baghdad Battery or the Ark of the Covenant which are considered by many to be other examples of advanced technology.

On Discovery Channel there was a documentary that suggested that Helike was the most likely site of Atlantis, due to many factors. It matches the coordinates given by Plato. Due to the geography, it has been buried underwater many times. Also, archaeologists found ancient artifacts underground that lead them to believe this was a very possible location for Atlantis. As for it being it's own continent. not possible since two objects cannot occupy the same space and there would have had to have been major natural disasters upon its demise that are only documented in the fiction of Plato. Storytellers back then were no different from what they are like today with dramatizing events to the point that there is no relation anymore between reality and fiction if there ever was one to begin with. Plus, how many continents are you aware of that are that small?

Is Atlantis buried underwater in the Caribbean or elsewhere? No. How would it even cross through the Strait of Gibralter for example and then float for weeks if not longer and then all of a sudden sink? Not to mention why? Some people believe that Atlantis still exists but in a different dimension and that you can only visit if you are "englightened". Again, that makes no sense to me.

The general scientific/historical consensus is that there was no continent named Atlantis which sank under the ocean. However, there are many plausible theories. The most plausible is that the eruption of the volcano Thera which shattered civilization on the island of Crete during Greek times provoked the legend. The original account of Atlantis was told by the Greek philosopher Plato. More of the theories are here:

No one knows. There are rumors about it being buried off the east coast of America, in the Aegian sea, in South America, and a bunch of other places.

Google it.

there have been dozens—perhaps hundreds—of locations proposed for Atlantis. Most of the historically proposed locations are in or near the Mediterranean Sea, either islands such as Sardinia, Cretand Santorini, Cyprus, Malta, and Ponza or as land based cities or states such as Troy, Tartessos or Tantalus (in the province of Manisa), Turkey, and the new theory of Israel-Sinai or Canaan as possible locations.

Locations as wide-ranging as Andalusia, Antarctica, Indonesia, underneath the Bermuda Triangle, and the Caribbean have been proposed as the true site of Atlantis. In the area of the Black Sea at least three locations have been proposed: Bosporus, Sinop and Ancomah (a legendary place near Trabzon). The nearby Sea of Azov was proposed as another site in 2003. In Northern Europe, Sweden (by Olof Rudbeck in "Atland", 1672-1702), Ireland, and the North Sea have been proposed (the Swedish geographer Ulf Erlingsson combines the North Sea and Ireland in a comprehensive hypothesis).Areas in the Pacific and Indian Ocean have also been proposed including Indonesia, Malaysia or both (i.e. Sundaland) and stories of a lost continent off India named "Kumari Kandam" have drawn parallels to Atlantis. Even Cuba and the Bahamas have been suggested. Some believe that Atlantis stretched from the tip of Spain to Central America. Intriguingly, the rulers of the Mayas and Aztecs claimed they came from a sunken land called Aztlan, and pointed east to the Caribbean as its former location.

The Canary Islands have also been identified as a possible location, West of the Straits of Gibraltar but in close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea. Various islands or island groups in the Atlantic were also identified as possible locations, notably the Azores (Mid-Atlantic islands which are a territory of Portugal), and even several Caribbean islands. The submerged island of Spartel near the Strait of Gibraltar would coincide with some elements of Plato's account, matching both the location and the date of submersion given in the Critias. Popular culture unceasingly places Atlantis in the Atlantic Ocean and perpetuates the original Platonic ideal.

I believe it does. There are many theories as to where, but I think there is also the possibility that there may be mistranslations. Perhaps it wasn't a continent, maybe it was an island...or perhaps it was a name of a modern day continent that was later changed to something else, like Babylon is now Iraq or Istanbul is Constantanople. We won't know for sure until we seriously look for it. Many people thought Troy was a myth until it was found.

The land or the civilization? Or just the memory? I suspect the Azores are at least a piece of it, although there is reason to place it in Peru and the Bahamas. It seems to be in mankind's collective consciousness. I even have a 'memory' of drowning in an Atlantean control room. What's weird is that drowning doesn't seem so bad to me now.
