The thing they saw swimming around is called a fluke and it is bad news. Yes they hide very well. As for the snail, they do not swim, ever. A snail makes its own shell, It never leaves its shell, It never needs a bigger one it just adds on to the one it has allready made by secreting this nasty stuff. If you crack the snail open you'll find that his skin has the same pattern as the shell, this proves that the shell was made with that particular snails pigment.

Now for a snail out of its shell, That is called a slug and it is not looking for a shell. It doesn't want or need one. It's body is very different from the body of a snail. It would never fit in a snail shell.

Now for the fluke in your fish tank, You REALLY need to find and KILL that PARASITE. IT MAY HARM YOUR FISH, depending on what kinda fish you have and their state of health. Most fish are susceptable to attacks by the killer parasite fluke.

To make sure that it is a fluke ask the ones who saw it. It will look like an arrow with the points rounded off. Not an arrow as in bow and arrow but like direction sign arrow. It is snail colored and roughly about snail sized.
It has 2 eyes on its top and it is more or less flat. It's really fast when it wants to be.

you should catch the fish and drain the tank immeadiately, clean thoroughly, throw away all of the gravel. In the future you should quaratine all new fish before letting them in your aquarium. It certainly came inside of a fish or it could have been hitching with the snail but that's a stretch even for a fluke.

whatever you do, please, do not drink the fluke!

Growing up, I had quite a few snails in my aquarium and NONE of them ever came out of their shells and swam around! I think they're pulling your leg.

Ummm..I think they do only to find a bigger one but the fact you but in a fish tank you will have to ask the fish and/or snail that.

The thing swimming around was most likely another creature in your tank, i dont know what they are but they hide very well in plants and in the stones, and only come out sometimes.
