I'm on the phone with my cousin and she's 31 wks. pregnant, she's been getting these sharp shooting pains straight down into her vagina and then it feels like someone is pinching her vagina wall. Are these normal? What could the pains be?

I am 31 weeks too and I get those pains but they aren't contractions. My doctor said it is normal and it I will experience more pains the closer I get. If she is really concerned have her call the doctor or go to the ER she is probably better safe then sorry.

It could be braxton hicks- which is fake contractions that only get you ready for the real deal! You will know when it is indeed real contractions when they are coming at a constant rate, like 10 minutes apart from each other or 15 minutes apart. The baby could just be pressing down into her vagina wall causing the pain so tell her to firmly rub her belly in attempts to move her little one to another position. This is really what it sounds like. Tell her to try and walk around or move to get her baby to move and hopefully the pain will stop. I hope this will help. If all fails... Call the OB on call at the e.r. and get professional advice! smile:) Wish you and the baby well!

I am 37 weeks pregnant and having the same problem. Just seen my doc. two days ago and he said it is pressure from the baby as well I am beginning to dilate and efface. If she is 31 weeks she should let her doc. know immediatly so that she can make sure she wont have pre-term labor, maybe they can check and stop it if she is dilating. Hope that everything works out for her!

That's normal, it can be caused by the weight of the baby pressing against the nerves in her back. It's recommended to sleep on the left side to alleviate the pressure of the baby on the nerves and blood vessels. Standing straight and having a good posture also helps.

I am having shooting pains not too bad though. It could be possible stretching. she should go to the doctor soon. My old gyn. told me most of those pains are normal preparing for birth.

I did that when I was pregnant with my son. Not sure why but, everything was ok. If she is really worried tell her to call her doctor that is what they are there for.

I had those with both of my babies. She should let her doctor know, but in my case it was a combination of my cervix starting to efface and dialate and my little monsters stomping on me from the inside!
