It is my understanding that homestead exemptions (in the US) are based on state statute and are not federal. Am I right and are there states without any exemptions?

Yes they are state and yes there are states that do not have them.

I'm pretty sure that you are right the it comes from State law. We don't have a homestead exemption in my State.

Yes to your assumption and both your questions. Since you know how to use the WEB, do a search for your state's statutes on homestead law. It's not hard to find....good luck.

Yes, you understand it. You will pay normal taxes for 2012. The exemption will start 2013.

Yep they are state. I'd do a search on the state govt site that you are interested in for more information than this though...

That falls under your state laws, as long as they do not infringe on any federal laws. Which would make them unconstitutional.
