I'd say mainly from curiosity and intrigue. They say the human brain is a minefield of useless information and in parts that's true, however our brains process millions of snippets of information everyday and mostly in the sub-conscience mind. We all constantly want to bridge the gap between what we don't know, what we'd like to know and what we might know already, but need conformation from other people.
What influences us the most to satisfy our curiosity is the power of new information, the desire to seek the truth, and/or ultimately the answer.

Everyone is different. The differences that exist in our education are vast. Each culture, religion and language promotes its own style of thinking. It is the nature of man to question what he does not understand. At the root of all questions is a willingness to try and improve our own situation. Only an ego maniac assumes that he'she know everything.

Look at young child just dicovering the world and they want to learn what is that, why can't I touch it, how does that work etc....? so they form the need to learn and grow. Later the questions become more complex to expand one's growth of knowledge in their area(s) of interest. So you could say it comes from simple human curiosity to grow and learn, its an natural thing that life nurtures.

I am not sure if the human mind and brain is that well understood yet, beyond locating what parts of the brain are used in the process.

If we knew the answer to that - we would know what being 'self-aware' was and if we knew that, there probably wouldn't be much mystery in life anymore - we'd get bored and wouldn't want to live ! Can I have another question please ? This one has become too depressing !

Usually because we want to know something, occasionally we just want to sound very deep and profound, or we are bored so we just think up something to ask to start a conversation.
