I would not recommend it unless you recently caught it from the wild and live where hermits are naturally found. Hermit crabs are all from tropical envrionments for one thing, do you live in a tropical environment where hermits are found? It will die in a colder environment. Plus, after being captive a long time it may not be able to properly fend for itself. If you no longer want the crab you should try to find another home for it with someone who does. If you recently caught it in the wild, put it back where you found it.

if you put that hermit crab on the beach he's only going to get eaten by a bird 5 minutes after you leave. That hermit crab was most likely not raised to know predators, so you should keep him or give him to someone who can.

You really shouldn't turn your crab loose, because they probably don't live in your part of the world. Go to an animal shelter or a pet store and see if they can do something about it.

No, you should never turn them loose. There are people all across the US and the world that have them for pets. THere are multiple places that you can post the hermie for adoption on.
www.petfinder.com
www.crabstreetjournal.com/adoption
http://hermitcrabassociation.com/pages/adoptions.html
Also you can go to www.Freecycle.org and find some groups near you. THen you can post the hermie for adoption on them. THere are alot of members on them and they watch to adopt hermies from there also.

Unless you live at the beach, turning him loose would mean a drawn out painful death of hunger, thirst, and exposure. With luck an animal or bird would peck it to death quickly. Why'd you get it if you didn't want to keep it?
