There were reports frm Patagonia (present day Eastern Agrentina) that a race of unusually large poeple several centuries ago. While some of the retelling may ahve begome exagerated, the most recent evidence indicates that these rports were trobably of people that wre not really much bigger than the other locals, but, becasue of thier manner of dress, their size was an optical illusion caused by the design of the cloaks and headdresses they wore.

There are tales of a tribe of giants in southern Peru. They were supposedly very vicious. I have to wonder if they were not Polynesians who would have seemed like giants to the short-statured natives.
There is a reference in a translation of a book by the son of a Spanish conquistador and Inca princess about hearing of such tribe that supposedly died out before the Spanish came, I believe. He doesn't give much detail.

yes a giant sloth that lived and posibly coexisted with the early humans there. they then passed on the stories orally. the early greeks dug up mammath bones but them together the wrong way and assumed they were human giants. It happend all the time. Then there is the other idea that a tall tribe did live there once its possible.
