They can get profit, if the chain letter tells people to send money to some address. Usually such scams say "send money to the first address on the list, then add your address at the end of the list." It is basically a pyramid scheme.

Besides, chain letters are at best some more spam, and who needs that??

These are often created to gather E-mail addresses of people. everyone who FORWARDS the E-mail has there address along with the addresses of all the people placed in the header of the E-mail. If you have ever looked (Or even understand the headers) of an E-mail you will see that the forward E-mail often goes back to the originator of the E-mail. This is how they collect the E-mail address of people and sell the lists to companys for Advertising reasons. Now keep in mind that this is not true for all of them. But a fair share of them are like this. Always delete spam and never reply or forward.

My personal feeling is that they can become a pest, and be annoying, from what i gather so far, I have not noticed anyone making money from it, as this could in most countries be loosely considered "pyramid selling" which i gather is mostly illegal now.

I believe in breaking those chains, there is enough junk mail around without adding more.

They are usually the only ones that do because they don't send money to anyone. Don't be scammed by chain letters.

THE CHAIN LETTERS ON THE E-MAIL CIRCUIT ARE STARTED BY SPAMERS SO THEY CAN GET YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS AND THEN SAPM YOU WITH ALL THAT JUNK MAIL YOU GET.
