Car washes(if it isn't too cold yet), benefit singings, collecting money at 4-way stops(personally, I really dislike the 4-ways), or possibly leaving a canning jar or a jug around at different local businesses with the families' picture and a brief description of their situation so that people can leave money in them. Those are some of the thhings that typically get done around here.

Contact your local news channel and tell them your story and give them a picture of the family and help will come from all over town! Rent a community hall, and have a dance & potluck. Charge each person 2.00 to get into the dance. (Use an ipod for music instead of hiring a DJ)
